Guardian Heroes FAQ Version 1.8 Maintained by : DkReaver dkreaver@inlink.com The original of the most current version of this FAQ resides at: Guardian Heroes FAQ http://www.inlink.com/~dkreaver/saturn.html This material is part of The Sega Enthusiast HomePage (http://www.inlink.com/~dkreaver/saturn.html) This FAQ represents a substantial investment of time on my part, please do not publish this material elsewhere in whole or in part without obtaining my prior written consent. This FAQ was originally intended for the Japanese version of the game, so some information may seem redundant. This revision of the document attempts to cover both versions. Among other things, I need some manual translation, storyline translation, and menu option translation. Any persons contributing any of the above would be appreciated and credited. The menu options I need translated are indicated in the FAQ. Thanks for your help. The Gunstar Heroes code is a bogus rumor, but all other known code information is in the FAQ. AFAIK there is no debug code for the American version. Cheats. Index Introduction: We should all expect this type of game from Treasure, their track record speaks for itself. On the Mega Drive, Treasure has been responsible for such hits as: YuYu Hakusho, Alien Soldier, Light Crusader, and who could forget Gunstar Heroes. All of these games were above and beyond what other companies were producing for the system, and some were totally ground breaking. Gunstar Heroes did amazing things with color count, on screen sprites, and gameplay that no-one else has ever managed with the machine. Now, Treasure has brought out their first attempt on the Saturn, and it really rocks the house. This is one of the best reasons to buy a Saturn, frantic fighting gameplay action! Pop in this CD and pick from any one of four heros to go out into the realm and kick some butt! Many people out there have been lucky enough to purchase a copy of the Japanese import, Guardian Heroes, and have been surprised and pleased by the game. The loading time is surprisingly low, especially when you first turn on the game. It comes up with the memory save options screen almost immediately if you have the RAM cart plugged in, and after you make your choice, it drops into the opening cinema almost immediately. (On the memory screen the first choice is the internal RAM and the second is the cart.) The cinema is also remarkable, it is full screen and very high resolution for the Saturn. If its framerate were only higher I would have been overwhelmed. This is a truly amazing game, 6-player support, incredible numbers of enemies on the screen at one time, kickin' audio, stylized anime graphics, the list goes on and on. American VS. Japanese: This title has made the transition from Japanese to American version largely intact. All of the game text has been translated, including the credits at the end. Suprisingly, the story does not seem spoiled or watered down by the translation. Just the same, the American version is afflicted with its share of 'Engrish' text. The only obvious change in the translation is the removal of the liquor references in some of the character names. Interestingly, both games use compatible save files. Hopefully, this means that the missing menu is available in the American version. Cosmetically, the game is unchanged. The graphics are the same as the Japanese version, as is the music. SOA appears to have left well enough alone for once. The only minor difference is the removal of the Japanese speech and SFX track during the opening cinema. Personally, I think that the FMV plays better without. Gameplay remains unchanged between the versions, but some gameplay options have changed. The sound test menu from the Japanese game has bee removed, so unfortunately I do not get an easy answer to what those bits are that I don't have (sigh). Additionally, the debug trick has been removed on the American version. If I find a way to do the debug trick, I will be sure to add it. Finally, in the American version only, when you finish setting up the VS. mode battles you can select the stage that your battle occurs on. Also, I have not been able to confirm this, but many posts have been circulating indicating that you have to beat the game in hard mode to access some menu options in the American version. Details on this would be appreciated. General Gameplay: Basically, this game boils down to a side scrolling brawler. I would compare it to Final Fight, or Streets of Rage. The major difference, is how the game handles depth. By using buttons on the controller, you cycle through three levels of fighting. This allows you to use the D-pad to perform complex SF2/MK style controller movements for special moves. I feel that this greatly increases the depth and style of the game. Also, your characters are capable of devastating magic moves, and you have a magic point reserve for performing these moves. As you play the game more and more, you find interesting depth to the gameplay. You can juggle and combo hits like in SF2. You can buffer or two in one motions to string truly impressive hits together. The size of your opponent affects how high or far they fly when you hit them. Be prepared to find new things in this game every time you turn it on. Another important distinction this game holds is the ability to block. Many of the characters are able to block attacks by holding the A button. Additionally, some can jump back by holding A+B, and also can dodge hits by hitting A,A. Blocking is very important, and like any fighter the factor that distinguishes good players from average players. Magic spell effects, and mental/Chi power attacks (like Ginjirou's lightning dive), are infectious. This means that if you hit someone with a spell effect, and then touch them, you are affected as well. In a mob situation, using magic can be dangerous to you as well because of this. The freeze spells demonstrate this effect most clearly. You can cast a spell, and the effects can pass by touch long after the spell itself has finished. But, in those mob situations, magic can often be the best option. As you go through the game, you gain experience points for casting spells, hitting live and dead enemies, killing enemies, and breaking the odd item laying in your path. At the end of levels you get the opportunity to spend these points on improving your character's statistics, and believe me, you need it! Attacks increase their damage potential, and magic spells grow more and more impressive as you increase your stats. Big magic attacks have to power up, but you can let them off early at a reduced effect by hitting C before they go off. Statistic Descriptions STR STR determines how much damage your regular attacks cause. Differing hits still cause different amounts of damage, but STR is a baseline addition to this amount. STR also determines how far enemies are knocked by your hits. Bigger enemies still don't fly as far as smaller enemies when you have high STR, but they will fly farther than when you had low STR. This is a very important stat for Han. It is also important for Genjirou, Serena and Randy, but less so than Han. VIT VIT determines how many HP your character has. The more the better. Everyone can use a high VIT except Nicore. Her healing spells can substitute for a high VIT. INT INT determines the effectiveness of your spells. At higher amounts of INT, your spells become larger and stronger. This is a very important stat for Randy, Genjirou and Nicore. Serena benefits from high INT also. MEN Determines how many spell points you have, and also how fast you recover them in regular combat. Randy, Nicore, Genjirou, and Serena all benefit from increased MEN. You do not need to pump this stat up too high, moderate increases are usually enough. AGL AGL determines how fast your character moves during physical and magical attacks. It does not effect the duration of mental attacks, but just the windup and recovery for them. At high levels of AGL, you will have to change your timing on your juggle combos to keep them effective. Genjirou and Harn need high levels of AGL. LUC This stat modifies the amount of damage you give and receive. With high levels of LUC, large random damage bonuses can happen, and large reductions of damage from hits can also occur. This effect works for magic as well as regular attacks. Nicore needs high LUC to get the better types of effects for her spells. Cheats First off, a general guide for finding secret arenas. On levels 3,5 and 12 you can access secret arenas. First you must kill all enemies on the level in question, then you must walk past the sign at the end of the level while being on the farthest line. The enemies you fight will be level 40 plus a value of 0 to your current level. You can continue fighting as long as you select the top option after vanquishing an opponent. This works in both the American and Japanese versions. Also you can get 98 continues in the story mode. Set the game to easy and let yourself die, then pick the third option when you die to quit. Set the difficulty to hard and then continue from the point where you left off. You will have 98 continues. Now, on to the real goodie: Debug Mode. This only works for the Japanese version. On the main menu, pick the option mode. Once on the option screen, press A+Y+C. Choose the first item in the option screen, the setup screen. The Debug mode will be the item on the end of the list. What debug mode gives you: Story Mode 1.Start the game at level 200 2.Stage Select To advance a Scene 1 Scene R+Start 2 Scenes R+A+Start 3 Scenes R+B+Start 4 Scenes R+C+Start To go back a Scene 1 Scene L+R+Start 2 Scenes L+R+A+Start 3 Scenes L+R+B+Start 4 Scenes L+R+C+Start 3.Max/Min Life a.Pause Game Hold X+Y+Z Press Up on the D-Pad for Max Life Press Down on the D-Pad for Zero Life VS Mode -- All characters available Both -- Put 2D or 3D boxes around characters a.Pause game b.Press R once for 2D boxes c.Press R again for 3D boxes d.Press start e.Pause again and press R for normal display If you have both the Japanese and the American version of the game, you can get some of the features of the debug mode to work in the American version. Enter the debug code in the Japanese version, start story mode and power up your character. Now reset the system with your controller and put in the American version. If you continue from your saved game you will have a high powered character to play with. Gameplay Options: Guardian Heroes, known hereafter as GH, has two main gameplay options. First, you can play in the story mode with one or two players. Second, you can play in the VS. mode, with up to six players at the same time. Story Mode: In story mode, you and one of your friends can go out and rid the realm of vicious enemies. Thirty different levels of action await. Choose from four characters to start with. Then, when you beat the game for the first time, you can pick a fifth, Serena. As you fight, the game will stop from time to time to interrupt with Japanese story elements, accompanied by a picture of the character that is speaking. At the end of levels, and at other key points you will have the opportunity to direct the course of the game. You will be given from 2-5 options, all in Japanese unfortunately, of what to do in any given instance. In addition to the explicit choices, the actions you take during the game affect the outcome as well. For example, if you kill the villagers, continue to attack dead opponents and destroy background objects you will get a 'Bad Karma' ending. Stage Spoilers Important characters are listed on the stages that you need to go to in order to play them in VS mode. You must have all the final bosses to play the Undead Hero. Stage Names and Information 1. Awakening Hang around in the burning house to gain extra EXP. Don't be shy about using your magic, it is easily replenished by attacking. 2. Prelude to Hope This is the first level that you can make a selection in. Note that this level can happen two different ways. If you hang back, you will be caged by the wizards. If you rush forward, you fight another group of soldiers rather than the 3 soldiers, the cyclops, and the 2 wizards. 3. Monster in the Forest In this level you encounter the Giant Plant (MID), Katrina, the Carnivorous Plant, the wolf and the goblin. Kill all the enemies on this level and walk past the sign while on the farthest line to enter one of the secret arenas. 8. Earth in Sorrow The second Undead Hero will be encountered here. If you are playing Han, you gain the sword of the second Undead Hero at this point. It adds 8 to STR, 6 to VIT, 4 to INT, 4 to MEN, 6 to AGL, and 10 to LUC for HAN only. Also you will get Sword Han for the VS mode. You have the opportunity to fight Kanon here. 17. Revenge 23. Truth 24. Fate You will encounter the Batwoman and G.E. Spirits final boss on this stage. 28. Warrior in the Light You fight Valgar here as the final boss. Also you encounter the Angel here. Experience in Story Mode At the end of every level, you get the opportunity to add to your character's statistics. They are displayed on the screen in Japanese in the following order: STR VIT INT MEN AGI LUC Selectable Characters in Story Mode: Han The obligatory muscle bound oaf. He is fun to play if you want to just wreak havoc. His hits do a truly remarkable amount of damage, and his sword has an unmatched reach. When you start out the game, you have the sword of the Gold Armor Skeleton Warrior (hereafter GSW, for Gold Skel... oh, you get the idea...) and are at 10th level with really high caliber stats, making this character an excellent choice for beginners. But once the GSW pops out of his grave to help you on the quest, you lose the sword and the headstart you had on the rest of the characters. You can get another version of the sword on the 8th stage when playing with Han. When you are playing with Han, concentrate on improving his physical statistics like STR, VIT, and AGL, as he only has one spell. Stay on the edges of big mobs. Although Han has some nice backwards hits, he will only do them once he has been hit from behind. Later in the game, your enemies do too much damage to allow them the free hits. His DW,DW+C moves, both on the ground and in the air, are devastating and spectacular, but do not overlook his toward+C sword thrust. Even Han's simple moves do a whopping amount of damage. Han before he loses his sword: STR: VIT: INT: MEN: AGI: LUC: Han after he loses his sword: STR: 16 VIT: 13 INT: 7 MEN: 9 AGI: 9 LUC: 14 Randy: The small guy with the golden staff and white robes. Randy can really dish out the magic powers. He has more and better magic skills than any of the other players. On the physical side, he does not do too much damage, but is capable of stringing an impressive number of hits together. In this ability he is second only to Ginjirou. To fight with Randy, you never want to forget his magic powers. Use those joystick move shortcuts to set off the magic. Do not rely on hitting Z and moving to the spell you want to cast, this method will get you whomped in a hurry, and Randy does not take damage too well. With the build up spells where Randy draws magic power in before letting loose, I believe you can hit C to cast the spell early at a lower power level to avoid being interrupted. (Can anyone confirm this?) Randy: STR: 3 VIT: 2 INT: 9 MEN: 9 AGI: 5 LUC: 2 Ginjirou: The martial arts expert with the green and purple gi. This is the guy to set up really huge strings of hits. Be prepared to watch the combo meter really skyrocket playing Ginjirou. Also, Ginjirou has an impressive array of magical spells. I would say that Ginjirou is my personal favorite, although Serena and Randy are more powerful and effective. With Ginjirou, you can get right in the middle of a mob of enemies and cut loose with a move. Toward, toward+C into the mob, then Dw,Dw+C up into the air, and cut loose with Dw,Dw+C in the air if no-one is falling on top of you. Another impressive thing you can do with Ginjirou is juggle with the toward, toward+C move, this works especially well on dead opponents (Sounds silly, but you gain experience for hitting dead opponents as well as live ones!). The electric palm is one of the best magic moves for Ginjirou. Be prepared to see 100+ hits rack up when you hit a close opponent with this move (Back, down, towards+Z). Ginjirou: STR: 4 VIT: 4 INT: 4 MEN: 8 AGI: 6 LUC: 4 Nicore: Doubtless they were trying to say 'Nicole' here, but I will leave the error intact for grins. The knock kneed girl with the happyfaces. She is physically very weak, and not the strongest magically. This is misleading though. Actually she is one of the more powerful characters in the game. The combination of her healing magic and barrier magic make her very effective alone or with a friend. The barrier spell can do immense damage to enemies, especially if you trap a blocking enemy against the edge of the screen. Using this spell properly, you can decimate the later enemies that are very difficult otherwise, taking more than half their life with a single good hit. The healing spell will keep you alive during those difficult levels later in the game. If you use this spell right, you should never have to spend EXP on VIT for Nicore. Also note that the Healing circle move will damage evil enemies rather than heal them. Nicore has several basic strategies that are effective. A simple combo: Dw+B, Dw+B, Dw, Dw+B,B,B,B,B (more B's possible at this point..). This can be repeated on most enemies. Another Nicore strategy: B+C beam up move in a group of enemies. This makes you invulnerable, and gives you quite a few MP. The run away and heal. Done right, you come out with more MP and HP with each repetition. The beam up move is especially effective on opponents in the air above you, immobile opponents, and slow heavy opponents. Also you can use this move to push enemies into a corner and follow up with the shield move for huge damage. Nicore: STR: 2 VIT: 3 INT: 5 MEN: 6 AGI: 4 LUC: 10 Serena: Selena?? Ah, well.. This is the girl in the red armor who fights with you in one player mode at the beginning of the game. After you beat the game for the first time, you can select this powerful beauty. Although her statistics are strictly average across the board to start with, she plays very easily. By just hitting B or Towards+B repeatedly, you can rack up major combos with Serena. Her sword attacks are nice and strong as well, and have to be tried to be appreciated. Get ready for a wide variety of cold related magics. Maybe we should call her the ice-woman? Note that in story mode there is an interesting bug with Serena. If you continue to juggle dead opponents for a long period of time (~30 minutes) Serena will turn darker and darker. I have only been able to get this effect in the burning house at the beginning of the game, the flames will turn green as this happens also. Serena: STR: 5 VIT: 5 INT: 5 MEN: 5 AGI: 5 LUC: 5 Story Mode Continue Prompts When you die in Story Mode, you have the option to continue. The options from the top down are: Continue Now Continue from the Start of the level, and reallocate the experience for the previous level. Save continues for later, and go to the main menu. Main Options Menu Translation This is documentation for the options menu accessible off the startup screen. The VS. mode menu will be covered in the VS. section. 1.More options: Fortunately this goes to an English screen, but I will go over the choices in the menu: Difficulty: Easy/Normal/Hard Like it says whiz kid. Reset Key: ABC+Start/XYZ+Start/ABCXYZ+Start/NONE Nice option for those 6 player brawlfests. User Friendly: On/Off Not sure about this one yet. Play Demo Time Limit: On/Off Lets the computer demo multiplayer fight in attract mode go until the finish, recommended. Pause Display: On/Off Leave this on, it controls whether you see your character template when you pause in story mode. Nice 'cause it is in English. Hit Combo Display: On/Off Gee george, I think this controls the onscreen hit count display... Audio: Stereo/Mono Another no-brainer. Enemy Level Display: On/Off Turns on a bar with the enemy's level, also recommended. Next Exp Display: On/Off Puts up a bar with a countdown in experience points to the next level. (Only in story mode.) 2.Button Configure: A - Defense B - Weak Attack C - Strong Attack X - Tell GSW what to do Y - Cycle one playfield level (backwards, unless in back, then to front). Z - Use magic, also the activation button for shortcut magic moves. L - Jump back one playfield. R - Jump forward one playfield. 3.Name a Player: Using the controller for the player that you wish to play, enter your initials. The options on the bottom from left to right are: Exit Takes you back out to the options menu. Enter Name Use the controller to pick the initials you want. Clear Selected Name: Yes/No Select Entry to Change Lets you pick which data you enter your initials at. 4.Another Submenu: The top option takes you to some Japanese text detailing the moves common to every character. Much of this will be in the FAQ, but I would appreciate any input here. The bottom option takes you to a screen showing all of the characters that you have encountered in story mode. If you select one of the characters, you can see their special moves. Again any help her would be welcome. I am not sure whether the on line documentation represents all the moves characters are capable of, but I have not found any that are not on these lists. 5.Sound Test Submenu BGM - Pick which BGM tune you want to hear. SE - Listen to the sound effects. VS Something - Perhaps something to do with the win loss records... ??? - Another that I don't know yet. ??? - With 011 on this side, possibly something to do with levels. VS. Mode In this mode you can play with up to six(!!) players, or any combination of less players and computer controlled opponents, or as few as two combatants. You can configure who fights against who, and who fights together. You control just how powerful each character is for each battle. Built in handicapping and 46 choices to play make this a long lasting game. VS. Mode Gameplay With the huge selection of characters in the VS. mode, there are some tricks you can do that are impossible in the regular game. With any of the civilians or any flying character, you can move between the three levels. Not only can you do this, but you can move closer and farther away than the game area with these characters as well. This can enable you to wait out the combat while the other combatants wear themselves down. Usually these characters are declared off limits by consensus of the players due to this very powerful trick. VS Menu Translation Some of the sections on this menu are duplicated in the options menu. 1.Regular VS. Mode Displaying these options from left to right: #P/CPU/Not Active Allowing you to choose whether the character will be player (# being the controller), computer or not used. Character Selection Accompanied by a picture. Select from any character you have encountered in Story Mode. Choose your character's color by selecting with different buttons. ???/???/Allocate Experience Manually I am uncertain what distinguishes the first two items, but one seems generally weaker than the other. The option resembling "I" will allow you to allocate experience manually. Level/Random Allows you to select the level of the character, or have it be random with a '?'. Side/Random Choose who the character will fight with and aggainst by assigning a letter from A to F or pick ? for random sides. 2.Timed VS. Mode Choose how many minutes (1-99) your battle will last, then enter the VS. setup, as above. Characters will reincarnate until the timer stops the battle. 3.Sub Menu Character Records Listing wins, losses and number of rounds fought from left to right. Player Records Listing wins, losses and number of rounds fought by player. Clear the Character Records Yes/No Clear the win/loss records for the characters. Clear the Player Records Yes/No The same thing for the player records. 4.Button Configuration Identical to options menu. 5.Naming Same as options menu, but these records only apply to VS. mode. 6.Commom and Individual Moves Sub Menu As in the options menu. Individual Character Moves I will endeavor to translate the real names of the characters. But for now, I have made some up. All players are accompanied by a coordinate location for the character moves screen and the VS. character select bar. The first number is the row and the second the column. The buttons are listed as they are traditionally referred to, but I am using a specialized controller motion reference. Tw is short for towards, and Bk is short for back. They replace all instances of left and right. Towards is the direction you intend the move to have its effect in, either left or right. Back is the opposite. Up and down are referred to normally. Diagonals are indicated with the slash, as in Dw/Tw (down/towards). The + indicates that the two inputs are simultaneous, as in Tw+Z (towards+Z). A direction with a + and no following value means either use B or C, with B being the weaker move than C. A~C means use A or B or C for that move. Moves in parenthesis are optional. Note: I have left the really simple moves out.
