Solution for the demo of Thief Gold by Roger How's it goin' ! The Thief Gold demo isn't very hard, but for the novice thieves I'm always ready to help, because I'd like to see more thieves and less "Quake-ers". Here's the solution. The part of the level is easyer to prowl throguh, even than Lord Bafford's Manor, but anyway, here we go: ---=== The Solution ===--- You start the game just near the Overlord's Fancy. Do 1-2 steps forward In order to start the script with the talking downwinders and the hmm... guy. When you hear voices, face left and go in the near shadow. When the conversation ends and the guys get in whisteling (which is really ill-timed, by the way), you should prowl to the door and start lockpicking it without knocking ;-) Don't worry about the guard who will pass by - he's just patrooling the streets (and, if you ask me, his wisteling gives out fis fear of patrooling in the night, all alone). He's not hostile, until you draw a weapon. While you are picking the lock, try to stay in the shadow near the door. When the door opens, there are chances that you see a thief, opening the door sraight in front of you and going away (but he'll come around again, patrooling), or coming from the lit door to your left. In the second case, I hope you are in the shadow I talked about and he won't see you. Anyway, when he isn't around you can enter the building and immediatly go in the deepest shadow near the wall to your left (the left, not the left corner). Then wait until the thief guard comes around again. Notice his routes. If you need you can wait him go away and come over again. Wait him to exit by the door most far from you and then stick to the wall near the lit room to your right, but stay in the shadow. The servant in the kitchen will probably say " "bla-bla-bla", is that you?". You shouldn't answer nothing ;-) just check where you should be: door ________________________ ________ N | | W E |fireplace door S | | kitchen door | | | | | | | | X3 | | \______________________ | | | | | | | | | | \_________X2___________ X1 __________________________________| front enterance door You are the "X" Here's my simple ASCII map. Remember: Before proceeding from X2 to X3 position, be sure to shut down the fireplace, or the nice shadow you are in on X3 won't be aviable. Wait for the thief guard to pass by you (when you are on X3). After he passes by ready your blackjack and hmm... yeah, blackjack him! If you ready the blackjack, before you see his back, he will see you (maybe other thieves can see my silhouette, because servants don't react when they walk by me in the shadow with a drawn blackjack). So when you blackjack him, pout him in the deep shadow you was standing in on X3 (this is a tactic you should use on every blackjacked body). There is no really use of this here, since no one passes around here (at least when you are playing on Normal difficulty), but the essence of proffesinalism is patience and training, you know. Go through the NorthEast door. In this room you get the trinkets from the table. You can't go through the door, because it's locked and it can't be picked or unlocked with the key, if you took it from the thief's belt (maybe the door is locked with a claps-lock from the other side). Prowl through the only enterance and wait for the whistling to stop. Then open the door either with the Thieves' Key (I mean the lockpicks) or with the key from this inprofessional "thief" you have blackjacked and made him look like a fool. If you are lucky the servant going around in the upper corridor won't caught you (or you caught him?). Now ready your blackjack, and wait for the servant. When he comes by, you know what to do. Hide his body in the shadows and and go through the door with the casks near it. Go to the only door in this room carefully. You see a sleeping "thief" in fron't of you. Don't kill him. "Violence is the mark of the amateur." Even if you are playing on Normal difficulty, try to sneak around him and unlock the box, that is closer to him. Try the other one too.It contains some arrows and is unlocked so don't try to lockpick it (like I did) Then get out of the room quietly and notice the hole in the floor of the previous room. I will tell you the easyest way to go thru it (because you will have to). Stand in front of it with a little distance. Then run and jump. When you are on top of it hit the down arrow on your keyboard, to fall thru the hole, otherwice, you will jump over it. Now comes one of the hardest parts in this demo. When you fall thru the hole you should take a lot of damage, but you will be alive. The first time I was playing the demo, I though I am dead and it took me a few seconds to understand that I'm not. Here's what happens: When you fall you make noice. The noice pisses off one of the crupiees in the casino and he warns one of the guards to start looking for you. So you don't lose any more time, just turn off the fireplace and hide in the corner, it should be dark enough. I'm saying the corner only because I mean the corner and not by any other reason. The guard will come. He will walk around looking for you. After some time he will decide that it was just the wind (falling from the chimney :-)) and go away. By some strange logic (some people call it "AI" ;) when a guard is looking for you he will always check the shadow areas. So if you are far from him he will decide it was the wind falling from the chimney before her reaches the shadowed area you are in and will just go away. That was the hard part. Now comes the harder (just taffing you! ;-) If in the beginning of the demo you have bought any healing potions, that's the moment to drink them, just in case. Then turn right and stay as shadowed as possible. When the guard comes by and goes away, press 4 to bring up your water arrows. Then press the 9 on your keypad to look right and douse the torch you see. Put away the water arrows and ready your blackjack. When the "thief" comes by and away again, go after him and blackjack him. Then turn 180 degrees and douse the torch you see. You may hear the crupiees talk something, (don't worry it's not about you). Then leave the "thief"'s body on the ground and get back where you entered the corridor from. Prowl thru the enterance and pick the trinkets from the table to your immediate right. Sneak to the crupiee and blackjack him. One of the guards will suppose he heared something, but don't worry, he'll take these thoughts away soon enough.Take the trinkets from the lit table, take the water arrows from the other side of this room and douse all torches around. Then, carefully come to the other room and and go to it's end. Whach out to stay in the shadows (you can douse only torches, don't forget) and reach the last table. Use the roulette and the secret door opens and the demo overs. Check your stats if you haven't took any beating, the damage you have taken from falling from the chimney should be seven or six. If you were doing what I say, this should be the only damage you have taken. Note: there is at least one more way to finish the demo, but I'll let you find it on your own.
