California Games was one of the first games I ever played/owned and I love it. I saw a request for it on GameFAQs so I thought "Meh, why not?" and decided to write a FAQ for it. And here it is... +-------------+ |2. Game Modes| +-------------+ 1. Compete In All Events 2. Compete In Some Events 3. Practice One Event 4. View High Scores +---------+ |3. Events| +---------+ Here will be the descriptions of what you have to do in each event, and maybe a few pointers as well. +-------------+ |3.1 Half Pipe| +-------------+ The infamous Half Pipe (or for all you people out there who don't know what a half pipe is). Here you test your skills by skating up and down basically half a pipe (as the name suggests). +----------------------+ |3.1.1 Half Pipe Tricks| +----------------------+ There are three different types of tricks you can do on the half pipe : +-----------+-----------+ |Trick |Point Value| +-----------+-----------+ |Kick Turn |100-300pts | +-----------+-----------+ |Hand Plant |400-700pts | +-----------+-----------+ |Aerial Turn|400-999pts | +-----------+-----------+ +------------+ |3.2 Foot Bag| +------------+ Foot Bag is one of my favourites on California Games. You have to kick a bag around (why do they call it a bag?) and perform tricks with it. This event is set not far from the Golden Gate Bridge (it is featured in the background). You can also see Alcatraz, well i'm guessing it is. +---------------------+ |3.2.1 Foot Bag Stunts| +---------------------+ Here is a list of all the tricks, how to perform them, and how many points each is worth... +-------------+-----------+-------------------------------------------------+ |Stunt |Point Value|How to perform the stunt | +-------------+-----------+-------------------------------------------------+ |Any Kick |10pts |You'll just have to figure this out yourself. | +-------------+-----------+-------------------------------------------------+ |Five In A Row|750pts |Basically hit the foot bag five times in a row, | | | |with your head, knee or foot. | +-------------+-----------+-------------------------------------------------+ |Half Axle |250pts |Hit the bag up, do a half turn, and then hit it | | | |again. | +-------------+-----------+-------------------------------------------------+ |Full Axle |500pts |Same as above, but with a full turn. | +-------------+-----------+-------------------------------------------------+ |Axle Foley |750pts |Same again, but now with one and a half turns. | +-------------+-----------+-------------------------------------------------+ |Horse Shoe |500pts |Hit the bag from one back to the other. | +-------------+-----------+-------------------------------------------------+ |Jester |2000pts |As the bag is coming down, position yourself so | | | |that it will pass right next to you and press A. | +-------------+-----------+-------------------------------------------------+ |Double Arch |2500pts |Left outside kick, then a right outside kick, | | | |then another left outside kick. | +-------------+-----------+-------------------------------------------------+ |Doda |5000pts |Left outside kick, then a head butt, then a right| | | |outside kick. | +-------------+-----------+-------------------------------------------------+ |Reverse Doda |5000pts |Same as a Doda, except right - head butt - left. | +-------------+-----------+-------------------------------------------------+ |Dizzy Dean |1500pts |Front head butt to back head butt. | +-------------+-----------+-------------------------------------------------+ |Head Banger |1500pts |Back head butt to front head butt. | +-------------+-----------+-------------------------------------------------+ |Nice Catch |1500pts |Simply catch the bag when it is throw back in. | +-------------+-----------+-------------------------------------------------+ |Poor Seagull |1000pts |Hit the bag so it hits the seagull. | +-------------+-----------+-------------------------------------------------+ +-----------+ |3.3 Surfing| +-----------+ Here your goal is too - 1. not bail, 2. not get swamped by the wave, and 3. perform some tricks for the judges. Not sure how you get scored in this event, so anyways. And, when you just start your run, I always try to squeeze in a 360, because you can usually pull it off with no problems. +-------------------------+ |3.3.1 A Few Tips & Tricks| +-------------------------+ * You can always do a 360 at the start of your run... * Always try and do jumps off the top of the wave, but remember to land at the same angle or you'll bail... * Try to mix up all of your tricks for higher points... +-----------+ |3.4 Skating| +-----------+ Here, you are skating along a concrete footpath, beside the beach, trying to avoid obstacles (another question - why the hell are all these things in the way in the first place?). +-------------------------+ |3.4.1 A Few Tips & Tricks| +-------------------------+ * Try to spin with every jump (press left when in the air) to perform a spin. You'll get extra points for spinning over obstacles. +--------------------------+-----------+ |What you do |Point Value| +--------------------------+-----------+ |Avoid an obstacle |10-30pts | +--------------------------+-----------+ |Jump over an obstacle |20-60pts | +--------------------------+-----------+ |Spin Jump over an obstacle|40-120pts | +--------------------------+-----------+ +-------+ |3.5 BMX| +-------+ My favourite event in the game. You get to cruise along a BMX track, pulling off tricks and stunts. You also have to make it to the end. And, you also have to avoid more obstacles along the way (old tires, tree stumps (why are there tree stumps on a BMX track?) and skulls of certain animals). +----------------+ |3.5.1 BMX Tricks| +----------------+ +----------------+------------+-------------------------------------------+ |Trick |Point Value |How To Perform It | +----------------+------------+-------------------------------------------+ |Wheelie (Manual)|100-200pts |While riding along, press and/or hold Left.| +----------------+------------+-------------------------------------------+ |Jump (Bunny Hop)|200-400pts |While riding along, press B. | +----------------+------------+-------------------------------------------+ |Table Top |500-1000pts |While in the air, press Up. | +----------------+------------+-------------------------------------------+ |360 |1000-2000pts|While in the air, press Down. | +----------------+------------+-------------------------------------------+ |Back Flip |1500-3000pts|While in the air, press Left. | +----------------+------------+-------------------------------------------+ |Front Flip |3000-6000pts|While in the air, press Right. | +----------------+------------+-------------------------------------------+ +---------------+ |3.6 Flying Disk| +---------------+ Here your aim is too throw a frisbee to your partner. You have to try and get distance, and also make your partner catch the frisbee as well. To throw the 'disk', push A. Then press left. The little needle will go left across the bar. When it hits the green section press Right. The needle will start moving right. When it hits the next green section, press Left again. The woman should throw the disk, and depending on where you stopped the needle, the disk will go a short or a long distance. +------------------------+ |3.6.1 Flying Disk Tricks| +------------------------+ After the disk is launched, you can move the other woman around who you can use to try and catch the disk. You can see where she is positioned at the top of the screen. Try and make it so that where the disk will approximately land, is where you position the woman. There are various tricks you can do to catch the disk: +-------------------+-----------+ |Trick |Point Value| +-------------------+-----------+ |While running right|150pts | +-------------------+-----------+ |While running left |250pts | +-------------------+-----------+ |While diving right |250pts | +-------------------+-----------+ |While diving left |350pts | +-------------------+-----------+ |Overhead catch |350pts | +-------------------+-----------+ +---------------------------+ |4. Other Miscellaneous Crap| +---------------------------+ Here is all the stuff that didn't fit into the other categories... +---------------+ |4.1 High Scores| +---------------+ Here is a list of high scores, when the game is turned on. And also a list of high scores that appear in the booklet, it's funny that they are different... +-----------+------+-----+ +-----------+------+-----+ |Event |Name |Score| |Event |Name |Score| +-----------+------+-----+ +-----------+------+-----+ |Half Pipe |Poppi |6675 | |Half Pipe |Gary |7720 | +-----------+------+-----+ +-----------+------+-----+ |Foot Bag |Kev |14240| |Foot Bag |Chris |30430| +-----------+------+-----+ +-----------+------+-----+ |Surfing |Paul |8.2 | |Surfing |Jim |7.9 | +-----------+------+-----+ +-----------+------+-----+ |Skating |Tess |1860 | |Skating |Sally |1940 | +-----------+------+-----+ +-----------+------+-----+ |BMX |Sweep |32620| |BMX |Karl |16438| +-----------+------+-----+ +-----------+------+-----+ |Flying Disk|Rachel|620 | |Flying Disk|Nan |620 | +-----------+------+-----+ +-----------+------+-----+ +------------+ |4.2 Sponsors| +------------+ And here is a list of all the sponsors in the game. But it doesn't really matter what sponsor you pick, they are all they same. It's strictly too make your trophy look more cool (*ahem* NOT!). Final Word| +-------------+ This was the second video game I ever bought (the first was Kung Fu) and I must say it was one of the classic games released for any system. Well not really, but I was six at the time we bought it, and I thought it was excellent then, and I still do now...
