Walk Back: Back Walk away from the opponent, blocks throws. Jump Forward: Up + Forward Jump toward the opponent. Jump Back: Up + Back Jump away from the opponent. Vertical Jump: Up Jump directly upwards. Crouch: Down Duck down, hold with Back to block throws. High Punch: HP Punch to the opponent's face. Rapid punches to the face takes off good damage, and pushes the opponent away if they are standing and blocking. Don't stop punching until they are pushed out of your punching range. Low Punch: LP Punch to the opponent's torso. Good for punching a crouching or ducking opponent, or as retaliation for a close blocked move. This takes off good damage if unblocked, and also pushes the opponent back. High Kick: HK Kick to the opponent's face. Useful after blocking a missile weapon or sweep at close range. Also good for hitting opponents jumping towards you. Be sure to kick them as close to their feet as possible. The will ensure that you override their jump kick. The standing High Kick is also good to use after sweeping your opponent. Low Kick: LK Kick to the opponent's torso. This quick kick is useful for keeping opponents away while close fighting. Can be done multiple times very rapidly to keep them at bay. Takes off little damage and is hard to retaliate against. Block: BL Get into a defensive position, hold it with Back to block throws also. Roundhouse Kick: Back + HK Roundhouse kick causing the opponent to spiral to the ground. Good for hitting jumping opponents, and also useful at close range fighting. If hit, the opponent is sent flying an unnatural distance. FootSweep: Back + LK Take the opponent off of his/her feet. One of the most powerful moves in the game. This keeps opponents away from you like no other move can. Best used at its full extent, otherwise it is a bit easier to retaliate against. Uppercut: Down + HP Flips the opponent backwards, hitting the floor, leaving a small stain of blood. The uppercut takes off the most damage of any standard move. Best used as retaliation: after a blocked kick, missile, or other move at close range. It is also very effective for hitting jumping opponents. Crouch Punch: Down + LP The crouch punch is a simple punch to the midsection. Useful for pushing away opponents at close range. The opponent recovers quickly and it takes off very little damage, but hard to retaliate against. Crouch Kick: Down + HK Kick aimed upward at the torso while you're crouching, knocking the opponent a few steps back. Much slower than the Ankle Kick. This move hits the opponent higher and takes off more damage, but can almost always be retaliated against. Best used to hit jumping in opponents. Ankle Kick: Down + LK Kick targeting the opponent's ankle while you're crouching. Faster than the crouch kick, harder to retaliate against. Face Smash: HP (Close) The face smash is a quick hard hit to the face. The specific move done varies depending on the character. These moves stun the opponent momentarily but take off little damage. Easy to block and retaliate against. The Face Smash can be very effective if you mix it in while close fighting. Throw: LP (Close) Throw or slam your opponent. The specific type of throw/slam varies depending on the character. Another powerful move that can counter a defensive player. Takes off good damage, but is easily blocked. Good to use when jumping in, especially behind the opponent, and during close fighting when your opponent make a move. Knee Smash: HK or LK (Close) The knee smash is a quick hard knee to the opponent's hip section. It takes off little damage and is easy to retaliate to if blocked. Good to use while close fighting when you anticipate your opponent about to sweep, punch, etc. Vertical Hop Punch: Vertical Jump, HP or LP Jump and punch the opponent on your way up. This is pretty much the same as the hop kick but takes off less damage and leaves you more vulnerable. Light Jump Punch: Jump Forward or Back, HP Hits the opponent using the fist, allowing you to start Kombo's with it since it doesn't knock the opponent to the ground. This is pretty much the same as the jump kick but takes off less damage and leaves you more vulnerable. Heavy Jump Punch: Jump Forward or Back, LP Hits the opponent using the fist, allowing you to start Kombo's with it since it doesn't knock the opponent to the ground. This is pretty much the same as the jump kick but takes off less damage and leaves you more vulnerable. Vertical Hop Kick: Vertical Jump, HK or LK Hits the opponent with a kick straight up. This can be used to counter a jumping opponent, or as part of a combo. Also good for kicking a standing opponent in the face. Long Jump Kick: Jump Forward or Back, HK Hits the opponent with a jump kick aimed diagonally downward, knocking the opponent to the ground. This is one of the most powerful moves in the game, especially against the computer. The hitting area of the jump kick varies from fighter to fighter. When fighting the computer, the best time to kick is early. Most often the computer will keep walking towards you and get hit. When fighting a human, the best time to kick is late. This will ensure an accurate hit that is harder to retaliate against. The focal point of the jump kick is the foot, so try to place your foot as close to your target as possible. The lower the jump kick, the easier the combo. Short Jump Kick: Jump Forward or Back, LK Hits the opponent with a jump kick aimed diagonally downward, knocking the opponent to the ground. Turn Around Jump Kick: Any type of jump kick after jumping past opponent. It kicks opponent from behind after jumping over him/her. Harder to retaliate against than a normal jump kick, and makes some combos easier. Turn Around Jump Punch: Any type of jump punch after jumping past opponent. It punches the opponent from behind after jumping over him/her. Harder to retaliate against. **************************************************************************** Section 6 : Special Moves Liu Kang Moves: Flying Kick: F,F,HK Bicycle Kick: Hold LK 3 seconds High Fireball: F,F,HP Low Fireball: F,F,LP Finishers: Fatality 1 (close): Hold BL (rotate joystick 360 counter-clockwise) [Liu Kang will do a cartwheel kick then a massive uppercut] Fatality 2 (sweep): D,F,B,B,HK [Liu Kang will transform into a dragon and bite the victim in half, leaving the legs standing] Friendship: F,B,B,B,LK [A disco globe drops from the ceiling, and Kang gets down] Babality: D,D,F,B,LK Pit: B,F,F,LK Combos: Jump Kick-Flying Kick Jump Kick-Low Fireball Jump Kick-Bicycle Kick Jump Kick-High Fireball Jump Kick-High Fireball-Low Fireball Jump Kick-High Fireball-Bicycle Kick Hop Punch-Low Fireball Hop Punch-High Fireball-Low Fireball Air Jab-Flying Kick Air Jab-Fireball Air Jab-Bicycle Kick-Low Fireball Air Jab-Hop Punch-High Fireball ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Kung Lao Moves: Hat Throw: B,F,LP Aerial Kick: D,HK (in air) Whirlwind Spin: U,U,LK Teleport: D,U Finishers: Fatality 1 (sweep): F,F,F,F,LK [Kung Lao removes his razor hat and slices the victim down the middle] Fatality 2 (full screen): Hold LP B,B,F (guide hat towards enemys neck) [Kung Lao throws his hat which decapitates the victim] Friendship: B,B,B,D,HK [Kung Lao pulls a rabbit out of his hat] Babality: B,B,F,F,HK Pit: F,F,F,HP Combos: Jump Kick-Hat Throw Jump Kick-Whirlwind Spin Jump Kick-Hop Kick-Aerial Kick Jump Kick-Sweep-Whirlwind Spin-Aerial Kick Hop Kick-Aerial Kick Whirlwind Spin-Hat Throw Whirlwind Spin-Jump Kick Whirlwind Spin-Hop Kick Whirlwind Spin-Hop Kick-Aerial Kick Air Jab-Hat Throw Air Jab-Hop Kick-Aerial Kick Air Jab-Teleport Kick-Aerial Kick ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Johnny Cage Moves: Shadow Kick: B,F,LK Shadow Uppercut: B,D,B,HP Ball Breaker: Hold LP and press BL High Green Bolt: F,D,B,HP Low Green Bolt: B,D,F,LP Finishers: Fatality 1 (close): F,F,D,U (Hold D+LP+BL+LK, he will knock off three heads!) Whoever presses their start button first will be the one who will fight Smoke. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Noob Saibot Win 50 games in a row. You must be fighting against a human opponent and receive the gold MKII symbol. If you lose to Noob Saibot, you may fight him again by winning just one more game or round. Apparently the computer only has 49 wins tracked if you lose to Noob Saibot, so you can theoreticly fight him over and over, as long as win against him. **************************************************************************** Section 11 : Things to try When playing with Reptile, do his invisibility move. Then make sure that your opponent is in the corner of the screen and you are next to your opponent. Hit your opponent with an uppercut, you will become visible. Sub-Zero can do the first part of the 'Perma freeze fatality' and then other finishing moves ('Tiny Iceball',Babality,). This is also true when you are Shang Tsung. When Finish him pops up, morph into Sub-Zero, keep doing the first part of the 'Perma freeze fatality' until you morph back into Shang Tsung, now morph into someone else and do their fatality on a frozen victim. When playing with Shang Tsung Morph into Sub Zero. Defeat you opponent and deep freeze him. Keep freezing him until morph back into Shang Tsung. Now Morph into Jax. Do his head smash fatality. Color map will get screwed up. When playing with Shang Tsung Morph into Sub Zero. Defeat you opponent and deep freeze him. Keep freezing him until you morph back into Shang Tsung. Now Morph into Cage. Do his tripple head-shot fatality and your opponent will 'melt' back to normal. Defeat your opponent on the Deadpool stage near the corner. Then jump over him and do the Deadpool fatality. The victim will go flying the wrong way and splash into the wall. When you are playing with Liu Kang, make sure you are ready to do a bicycle kick when Finish him pops up. Now do the bicycle kick, and you can still to the dragon fatality. Most characters can perform 'Late fatalities'. To do this time it so that your fatality starts just when your opponent is about to drop to the ground. They will fall, get back up again, and suffer your punishment. Note that the timing to do this is very difficult! When you have hit your opponent into the Spikes on the Kombat Tomb stage, you can let them slip off by quickly pressing D for both players (hold until the body slips off). The timing for this trick is difficult, so it might not work all the time! On the Deadpool stage, when playing with Sub-Zero or Shang Tsung morphed into Sub-Zero, you can do the first part of the 'Perma freeze fatality' and then knock to victim into the pool. This way a frozen body will go flying into the pool! (Note: You can do a variation of this by setting 1 HIT KILLS on in the cheat menu. Now kill your opponent by just freezing him and then knock him into the deadpool) When playing with Scorpion, get your opponent in the corner of the screen before you kill him. He must be totally in the corner! Now kill him and jump into to corner. While in the air, quickly press D,D,U,U and hit HP as soon as you land. Scorpion will do the 'Toasty!' fatality too close to the opponent, and his head will appear on his shoulder! When playing with Cage, kill your opponent in the corner of the stage. Then jump into the corner and press D,D,F,F while you are in the air. As soon as you land press LP. Cage will do the torso rip fatality, but he will grab behind the opponent, so he grabs thin air, but still rips of the torso! Do Baraka's blade fury, and have Kitana throws her fan into you. Her throwing hand will be the part of her that gets hit by Baraka's blades. Kitana will get hit with the blades, but she will still manage to throw her fan at Baraka. This will cause Kitana to get cut up, even though Baraka has been knocked down. If you do this at the end of a round, blood will spew everywhere until the next round starts. When playing with Sub-Zero, Scorpion, Reptile, Baraka, or Lui Kang, win the round by throwing your victim. As soon as your victim get thrown, have the victim hold down and tap any attack button. The victim will do the move, then go into his dizzy animation. Baraka can do the blade fury after round 1 after a throw, even though the victim is already dead. If you time it right, you can dead-pool uppercut Raiden in while he is warpy colors (time it so that he's getting up). Do Reptile's tongue fatality on The Armory stage and watch the floor moving. On the Deadpool stage, do Sub-Zero's deep freeze. Then do F-D-F-F-HP then immediately hold LK and LP. The screen will darken, fatality music will play, and Sub-Zero will hit the victim into the Deadpool. When playing against Shang Tsung try to throw him out of his fireballs, and if both players get hit and take damage, keep walking towards each other. You will be able to walk through each other. When playing with Sub-Zero, Scorpion, Reptile, Baraka, or Lui Kang, win the round by throwing your victim into the corner, and have them try to uppercut you. The winner gets smashed, and as soon as the victim finishes with the uppercut, they go into their dizzy animation. The winner can then do the fatality or whatever. Have the victim do the Deadpool uppercut. The winner takes a dip in the deadpool, and the loser does the winning pose. When Playing with Reptile, win the round by throwing the victim into the corner while invisible, and have do the victim Deadpool uppercut. Reptile will take a dip, and appear in a thrown position. a few inches from the victim. When playing with Scorpion or Shang Tsung (in which case you would have to morph into Scorpion), make it so that Scorpion is against the wall, and the victim is about sweeping range or so. Have the opponent jump towards you, and you jump at them, then air throw them. At this point, victim should be falling into the corner. Just after the air throw starts, have victim start trying to uppercut. As soon as Scorpion lands, do his friendship. Scorpion will get hit out of the friendship, and you can bash him for the time it would have taken to do the friendship, uninterrupted. Babality takes more accurate timing, but it's worth it to do some baby bashing. After doing a babality, you can still do a friendship, or another babality provided you don't punch the baby. Substitute the normal uppercut for the deadpool uppercut and there will be a baby sitting on the ground, and a person floating in the ooze. If you use Shang Tsung, you can do lots of stuff: Turn into Baraka and slice the baby . Johnny Cage ball punch the baby causes the baby to shoot up about an inch. Throwing the baby will cause the baby to fly straight up. There are many more. Find them! It's fun! The computer will walk backwards right after he throws you. Jump at him when he is walking backwards, and don't attack. Keep walking towards the computer, and if the distance is right, the computer will keep walking away from you. When he hit the corner, he will continue to try to walk away from you. **************************************************************************** Section 12 : Informal Notes The Rules of Kombat The basic purpose of Mortal Kombat is to diminish all of your opponent's energy before he diminishes yours. Each fight is best-of-3 rounds. If your energy is equal to your opponent's and the time runs out, a draw is ruled. Once a kombatant gains two victories, he may "Finish" his opponent by a Fatality, Babality, Stage Fatality or he can make his opponent his friend by a Friendship. The Rule of Kombat -- Loser Pays, Winner Stays. Forward/Back Directions Forward refers to the direction toward your opponent and Back refers to the direction away from your opponent. These depend on your position in the view and is a standard way to list moves in fighting games. The Block Button The Block button was introduced by the first Mortal Kombat. It is used in many special moves and finishers, and it lets your character to go into a defensive position to minimize the amount of damage you'll take. Basic Moves Basic moves are universal and relatively easier to pull off than special moves. They are typically less damaging than special moves and usually less impressive-looking, with a few exceptions. Basic moves are also useful in Kombos during fights. Special Moves Special moves are specific to characters. They are generally harder to pull off than basic moves, but are easy enough to perform that you can use them as part of your offense during fights. Usually, special moves look more impressive and do more damage than basic moves, and some of them can also be used in Kombos. Kombos Kombos refer to Combination Attacks. They are a linked sequence of attacks, and gives the opponent no time in between hits to retaliate. Finishers The first Mortal Kombat introduced the concept of finishers to the whole genre. The first type of finishers were Fatalities and everyone in MK1 had their own. The second type was originally referred to as "Pits", but have come to be known as "Stage Fatalities", which make use of the current stage's resources. Finishers can be performed when you have won the fight and "Finish Him!" (or Her) is announced. Beginning with MKII, as a parody of the original Fatality idea, new finishers like Friendships and Babalities are created. Regular and Hidden Characters Regular characters are the characters that can be chosen without the use of any codes. They are available on the select screen by default. There are a total of 12 regular characters in MKII. Hidden characters are ones who must be unlocked via some sort of code. There are three hidden characters in MKII Jade, Smoke and Noob Saibot. 1**************************************************************************** Section 13 : Fighting Tricks Fighting Against Computer General Tricks : Use sweeps a lot, and sweep multiple times. Time them so they hit the feet of the opponent at your fullest range. Otherwise the computer will walk through your sweep and throw you. It is possible to beat the computer using nothing but sweeps. Use early jump kicks a lot. Jump away from your opponent as far a you can. Then jump towards them and kick early. The computer will either walk right into your kick, jump back, or try to retaliate. Most often as retaliation they will do a straight up jump kick that will usually not connect. Time your jump kicks. If you are far away from the computer, stand still. The opponent will walk halfway across the screen then stop. It will then start to fire a missile weapon. At this point walk forward a bit then jump towards them. Their missile attack should go under you, leaving them vulnerable to a jump kick then combo. If you jump too soon or too late you will get hit. Avoid all close in fighting. Don't try to walk up and punch the computer unless on a low difficuly setting. They will either throw you or punch you then throw you. Only punch the computer as retaliation. Walk the computer to the corner. Sometimes when you jump towards the computer oppoenent, they will start to walk backwards. Keep walking towards them until they reach the corner. When they do, walk back to a good jump kick range. Wait for the computer to start to fire their missile, then jump in and do the combo of your choice. If you jump in and the computer blocks, walk back a few steps then jump away. If you jump back immediately, the computer will hit you with a missile or a straight up hop kick. Using which joystick determines some computer actions. Playing on the right side usually makes it easier to defeat the computer. Playing on the left side allows you to trick the computer into jumping towards you. Let the computer walk towards you. When they are getting within sweep range, jump away. Sometimes the computer will stand there for a moment then jump towards you without kicking, leaving them vulnerable to the combo of your choice. Of course playing on the left side makes the computer more difficult, somehow. If you are fighting the first opponent on medium or less difficulty, you can just use the crouching punch the entire round and the will not be able to throw you. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Fighting Against Kintaro Kintaro is actually a challenge to beat. His moves are very powerful and he is fast for a big guy. Stay away from that scorching fireball blast and you should be OK. Don't let the crowd get to you either, they are definately biased. General Tricks : Use footsweeps a lot, he is a sucker for them. Time your sweep so that you hit him with the end of your foot just as he walks into range. He will stagger back and groan. Duck, then repeat. Jump kicks work sometimes, but don't use them a whole lot. Kintaro will most likely block then grab you or punch you. If he does block, you can try to jump away and run the risk of the fireballs. Or try a standing block. If he punches or uppercuts you, it hurts, but at least you won't go flying. Hop kicks work the same way. Kintaro is a cocky, four-armed Tony the Tiger. If he leans back, growls, and flexes, Uppercut him. Missile him. Jump kick and combo him. Hurt him. Kintaro is easiest to hurt when he hops towards you. It is easy to spot when he will do it because he hops in place first. If you see him do this, align yourself to be in the best position to retaliate. When he hops towards you, uppercut him or whatever. If Kintaro spits fireballs at you, duck. When Kintaro jumps into the sky, get out of the way. The best things to do is jump away and kick. This will usually hit. If you are good, you can uppercut Kintaro as he is coming down. If you are trapped in the corner, try jumping away from the corner while punching. Always do your missile after you knock Kintaro down. It will usually hit him unless you are on the far side of the screen. After Kintaro jumps on you from the sky, he will always lean back and growl. When he does this you can either walk up and uppercut him, use your missile, or use a jump kick then combo. Keep punching Kintaro while he is in the corner, and he can't do anything about it! Keep doing until Kintaro dies. Kitana : Once you have learned Kintaro his movements, you can beat him using a lot of jump-back-throw fan in the air-combos. Most of the time your fan will hit him in the face. Just remember to jump back a lot, this way you're always on a distance, and when he hops or jumps into the air, he'll land next to you and get hit by your fan! Occasionally do a jump-kick or when you are walking backwards, and he's following you on foot, use a fan lift-combo. Scorpion: Throw a spear at Kintaro. If it hits him, and you pull him closer, don't do an uppercut, but throw another spear! You have to wait a second or so before you can throw a spear again. Once you've got the timing wired (difficult!), you can kill Kintaro just by throwing a lot of spears. Sub Zero: Ice him. Leap around, kicking him in the head, if you can, but avoid landing too close. Whenever he jumps, or stomps, side step, and freeze him, then head in and uppercut him. Also, freeze him when ever he spreads his arms.. as he does after a decent hit, or a successful stomp. Duck, and freeze him when he fires. Also, if you time it right, freeze him when he gets up from a hit...but not too early, or you'll only be able to sweep him. He's almost as easy to cheap-freeze as Goro was in MK1. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Fighting against Shao Kahn Shao Kahn, like Kintaro, is a challenge to beat. You can not fight him 'normally' because he is immune to jump kicks, walks faster than you, and has devastating moves. Stay away from his fireball, and never get hit by his shadow charge. General Tricks: When the round begins, chances are Shao Kahn will charge you or throw his spear at you. If this happens, jump away from him quickly. If you can't jump in time, duck and block, then jump away. You will be forced to take blocking damage, which hurts. Shao Kahn is a taunter. If he says things like 'You will die' and 'I will destroy you', he is taunting you. He is also vulnerable then. Walk up and uppercut him, missile him, etc. One tactic to use is to jump right in front of Shao Kahn and immediately duck. He will either charge you (in which case you take damage), or uppercut you. His uppercut will miss and you will have a chance to uppercut him, or do whatever. Repeat this throughout the round. If you do hit Shao Kahn, be sure to fire your missile while he is getting up. He will always get hit if you are at the right distance. Another tactic is to go all the way into the corner. Let Shao Kahn get close. If he charges, block then uppercut. Follow the uppercut with a missle. Then duck and block again and hopefully he will do the same thing. Kitana: Let Shao Kahn walk close to you then do the fan lift. He will walk right into it. Do the jump kick - fan throw - aerial punch combo. Allow him to walk towards you again and repeat. This tactic also works well on Kintaro. Baraka: Just keep doing the Blade Fury, he'll just walk into it. Mileena: Keep doing the Teleport Kick the entire round, and you'll always win. Raiden: Do the Body Launch the entire round. Shang Tsung: Start of by making sure Shao Khan is far away from you, morph into Kitana and do a fan lift-combo twice on Khan, now you are about to morph back into Shang Tsung, make it so that you are far away from Khan and do a triple flaming skull to keep him at a distance, then morph back into Kitana and start over. Kung Lao: Just keep doing Kung Lao's whirlwind spin. Shao Kahn walks into it every time, even on the hardest difficulty level. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Fighting Human Opponents Play defensively. Always allow your opponent to make the first move. When they do make a move, capitalize on their mistakes. Learn how to retaliate effectively to take off the most damage. Master close fighting. If you can handle an opponent at close range, this will force them into jumping or long range attacks which you can counter. Use a series of low punches, rounhouses, sweeps, crouching punches, and crouching kicks to throw them off balance. Your opponent will always expect you to throw jabs at them, but when you mix in a crouching punch or a roundhouse, that will throw them off, and they will react hastily. Learning how to block properly (down + away) is also very important. Never jump. Especially towards your opponent. Unless you are playing Baraka or Shang Tsung, it is very easy to retaliate against. Stay on the ground as much as possible. Always walk towards your opponent and engage them in close fighting. Never use missile weapons at close- to mid-range. It is too easy to retaliate against at close distance. At mid-distance, it is very easy to do a jump kick over the missile weapon. Missle weapons at long distance is good of course, unless you are playing a Scorpion or a Mileena who can get you with a special move. Learn other tactics by watching or playing someone else. Learning by experience is the best way to go, and you can pick up different strategies that are not listed here. **************************************************************************** Section 14 : Where to get this FAQ The latest version of this FAQ can be found at these sites: 1.
