Hard mode:
Complete the game successfully.


Legendary Dark Night mode:
Complete Hard mode successfully.


Dante Must Die mode:
Complete Legendary Dark Night mode successfully.


Super Dante mode:
Complete Dante Must Die mode successfully.
Note: In Super Dante mode, you can transform into a devil.


Easy mode:
Complete mission 1, 2, or 3 successfully with at least one used "continue". At The Biginning of the next mission, you will find an option to change to easy mode. But after you have activated easy mode you cannot return to normal mode.
